POMONA, Calif. - Consistency was key in Friday's match against Cal State San Marcos and the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team delivered, adding another win with its 3-1 victory over the Cougars during the Cal Poly Pomona Tournament at Kellogg Gym.
With the win, the Broncos climb to 4-3 overall while the Cougars, a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), drop to 11-5 overall.
The final set was a true team effort by the Broncos, who posted 18 kills and a team attack percentage of .375. Several CPP players boasted high attack percentages such as freshman middle blocker
Alexa Hasen, who earned nine kills with no errors for an attack percentage of .643 and sophomore middle blocker
Lauren Jones, who earned 10 kills and no errors for an attack percentage of .588.
Excellent performances from senior libero
Kelly Bonja and freshman libero
Zoe Herrera clinched the set for the Broncos for a final score of 25-17.
Much of the first set had the Broncos and Cougars neck-and-neck, but two serving runs by the Broncos forced CSUSM to use all of its timeouts. Sophomore outside hitter Brittany Thompson served the Cougars to within a point of the Broncos, but a well-placed tip from CPP freshman setter
Nicoletta Stork ended the comeback and the Cougars were unable to overcome the deficit. CPP won the first set, 25-19.
After a solid first set, two five-point serving runs from CSUSM players Thompson and sopohomore setter Alyssa Foster gave the Cougars a comfortable second-set lead. The Broncos used a timeout to regain control, but eventually, a series of serve-receive errors led to a four-point deficit late in the set and they could not recover. This allowed the Cougars to win the second set, 25-22, and tie the match, 1-1.
The first two points of the third set went to the Cougars, but the Broncos quickly rallied to gain the lead and held on to it for the remainder of the set to win 25-19. Hasen, senior outside hitter
Diana Lake, and Stork created a wall in the front row for the Broncos, earning five straight points on blocking alone.
The Broncos will go on the road to play their next match against the Lumberjacks of Humboldt State (1-3) on Wednesday. The first serve is set to go off at 7 p.m. The Cougars will play their fourth of five matches in the Cal Poly Pomona Tournament against Cal State Dominguez Hills (2-4) on Saturday at 2 p.m.
