Box Score | POMONA, Calif. - With consistently strong effort on defense Saturday, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team defeated San Francisco State, 47-39, to earn its sixth-straight victory.
The Broncos improve to 9-5 overall and 7-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while the result drops the Gators to 8-6 overall and 5-5 through league play. CPP remains in a three-way tie for second place with Cal State L.A. and UC San Diego.
Senior guard
Jennifer Bryant led the Broncos with a game-high 13 points as she went 4-for-4 at the free throw line. The San Diego native also added six rebounds.
Fellow fourth-year
Ashley Boggs paced CPP on the boards with 10, marking the fourth time this season that she has reached double digits for that category. Meanwhile,
Lauren Goecke racked up a career-high eight rebounds as a key contributor for the Broncos.
Both offenses got off to slow starts in Saturday's matchup as they shot less than 30 percent and combined for 15 turnovers through the first 10 minutes of play.
With the Gators clinging to a 10-8 edge at the midway point, CPP started to build momentum.
Rachel Porter knocked down a free throw to cut the margin to one point and then Bryant followed with five-straight points to swing the score to 14-10 in the Broncos' favor.
CPP stretched its lead to 19-12 after a perfectly executed fast break with about six minutes left in the period.
J.J. Judge sent a pass up past halfcourt to
Rian Mew, quickly dished it off to Bryant on the right wing for a 15-foot jumper.
Broncos' free throws in the late stages of the opening half pushed the host's advantage to double digits – 27-17 – heading into the break.
Mew gave the CPP offense an extra lift in the second half as she grabbed an offensive rebound and dropped in two buckets in the early stages of the period. Her second field goal at the 14:32 mark pushed the Broncos' lead to 34-21, the largest margin of the game.
A basket by the Gators' Lauren Varney at the 5:12 mark brought the margin down to six - 40-34 - but that's the closest the visitors would get.
Both squads finished with lackluster shooting percentages as CPP hit 25 percent of its field goal attempts while SFSU connected on 30.4 percent of its opportunities.
With a 5-1 home record and a 3-4 away mark so far this season, the Broncos will get a chance to improve their road results and extend their winning streak on Friday with a 5:30 p.m. matchup at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
