POMONA, Calif. - NCAA Division II is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2013 and in looking back at the four-decade history, Cal Poly Pomona has taken a prominent place in the highlights thanks to the program's 14 national titles.

After the formation of Division II in 1973, it took just three years for the Broncos to capture their first-ever championship at that level. Legendary coach John Scolinos led the baseball team to a 40-win season en route to the 1976 D-II national title. From that team, four student-athletes received All-American honors: Clay Harris, Ken Hellyer, Bruce MacPherson and Dennis Sherow.

The CPP baseball program has two more championships in its rich history as the 1980 and 1983 squads proved to be the best in Division II. The Broncos will honor the 1983 team this week with a golf tournament Friday and the annual alumni game at Scolinos Field on Saturday.

Another championship team to be honored in the upcoming weeks is the CPP women's basketball team of 1982. At the Feb. 2 home game against Chico State, the 2012-13 Broncos will hold a halftime ceremony to commemorate the 1982 squad. After capturing that title, coach Darlene May guided CPP to two more in 1985 and 1986 while three-time All-American Vickie Mitchell starred for the Broncos.

Coach Paul Thomas led CPP to back-to-back national titles in 2001 and 2002 as the Broncos combined to collect 55 wins through those two seasons. In the 2001 championship game, CPP topped North Dakota State in overtime. To read BroncoAthletics.com's republished story of the 2002 title game, click here.

Although the women's basketball program has the most national championships (five) at Cal Poly Pomona, ranking a close second is women's tennis. Three-time All-American Cathy Claussen and two-time All-American Tracy Wills helped the Broncos capture D-II titles in 1980 and 1981 before CPP picked up two more in 1991 and 1992.

The Broncos' 1983 men's cross country team finished as the No. 1 squad at the Division II level. Led by All-American honorees Matt Blaty, Gary Borbon and Tony Reyes (current CPP assistant coach), the Broncos' 1983 title was one of seven top-10 finishes under legendary coach Jim Sackett.

The most recent D-II title in Cal Poly Pomona history is the men's basketball championship in 2010. That memorable Broncos' squad became the first unranked team to win the championship since North Alabama in 1979.
