Box Score | LOS ANGELES - The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end Saturday as the Broncos fell on the road at Cal State L.A. by a 62-42 result.
In a battle of two second-place teams, CPP drops to 10-6 overall and 8-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while the Golden Eagles improve to 14-5 overall and 9-3 through league play. With the top of the conference pack so crowded, the Broncos now occupy fifth place in the standings.
Mian Dingle and
Ashley Boggs collected 13 points apiece Saturday to lead the CPP offense but those two performances were overshadowed by a 25-point effort from Golden Eagles' senior guard Tessondra Williams.
As a team, the Broncos shot 22.6 percent with that mark representing the lowest for CPP this season. L.A. outrebounded the Broncos 54-33.
The Broncos' offense struggled through the majority of the first half as CPP opened the contest by going 0-for-8 from the field. Boggs knocked down a 14-foot jumper from the right side to snap that field-goal drought and cut the Golden Eagles' lead to 6-4.
While L.A. proved to be more effective on its attempts in the first 20 minutes, the Broncos exhibited tremendous effort on defense as they collected seven steals and forced 15 turnovers.
Dingle provided key baskets to keep CPP within striking distance. A pair of free throws by Dingle at the 2:02 mark trimmed CSULA's edge to 23-19 but the host squad closed out the half strong to take a 27-20 lead into the break.
Williams opened the second-half scoring with a three-pointer on the first possession and the Golden Eagles kept their lead in double digits for the remainder of the game.
A modest 5-0 run for the Broncos - a spurt that featured baskets from Dingle and Boggs in addition to a free throw by
Rachel Porter - trimmed the margin from 18 down to 13. The host L.A. squad kept its composure though and in the end, hit 49 percent of its shot attempts on Saturday to close out the victory.
The game environment Saturday at the Eagles' Nest replicated that of a Broncos' home game, thanks in large part to the Cal Poly Pomona Pep Band traveling to L.A. to show support.
CPP will return to action Thursday with a 5:30 p.m. home game against Cal State Stanislaus.
