Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team broke through offensively Sunday in a physical match with San Francisco State as the Broncos posted a 2-0 victory at Kellogg Field.
Freshman
Mathew Perez scored early at the 7:40 mark to put CPP on the board and
Ian Trantow added an insurance goal late in the match to ensure victory.
It marked the first win for the Broncs in nearly a month as CPP has tallied three draws in that time while battling in the tough South Division of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). In the West Region poll released earlier this week, four South Division squads rank within the top six and the North Division is not represented in those spots.
In the Broncos' next match, playoff-bound UC San Diego will visit Kellogg Field for a 4:30 p.m. match Friday.
Sunday's contest between the Broncos and Gators proved to be a bit chippy with eight cautions issued, including six in the opening half.
The goal from Perez in the 8th minute was a thing of beauty as he got a
Luis Najera Jr. pass from the left side and then knocked a line-drive shot into the left corner of the net from about 18 yards away. It marked the second score for Perez this season.
Senior
Brandon Cortez tallied a team-high three shots and one of his best chances came in the 70th minute. Sophomore
Kris Korich made a nice move past a defender to dribble toward the box and then found Cortez with a pass. The spinning shot from Cortez sailed over the crossbar and the score remained 1-0.
Trantow provided a bit of breathing room for the Broncos though with his second goal of 2013 at the 86:25 mark. Jesus Tomayo sent a pass to the top of the box, where Trantow trapped the ball with his chest. He then turned and lined a shot past Gators' goalkeeper Anthony Rodriguez to extend the lead to 2-0.
With the CPP defense putting together a solid performance, junior goalkeeper
Fernando Pablo Quevedo didn't need to make a single save to record his first win and shutout of his Bronco career. Defenders
Leonel Espinoza and
Jose Ortega continue to lead the team in minutes with respective totals of 1,444 and 1,434.
