Cal Poly Pomona Falls to No. 17 UCSD Friday, 1-0

Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – For the second time in two weeks, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team got a chance to take down nationally-ranked UC San Diego.

In spite of the Broncos holding a 13-12 advantage in shots, the score ended up being the same result as Oct. 20 with the Tritons securing a 1-0 victory.

CPP will look to move on from that result as the Broncos will celebrate Senior Day Sunday at Kellogg Field. Brandon Cortez, Jesus Mitre, Christopher Rosales, Tyler Swobe and Andrew Todd will be honored and the ceremony will be held just before the 11:30 a.m. kickoff.

On Friday against UCSD, the Broncos put together several scoring chances that could have given the host squad an early lead.

Less than seven minutes into the contest, a hand ball in the box from the Tritons gave CPP a penalty kick opportunity. Luis Najera Jr. lined the ball toward the left corner but UCSD goalkeeper Josh Cohen made the diving stop to keep the score at 0-0.

Junior netminder Fernando Pablo Quevedo also played well for the Broncos and made several leaping saves in the first half. In the 12th minute on a UCSD corner kick, Alec Arsht sent a sharp header that Quevedo managed to deflect away.

The score remained 0-0 at halftime but the Tritons got on the scoreboard in the 52nd minute on a slow developing play up the right side. Alessandro Canale passed the ball upfield to Will Pleskow, who stumbled momentarily before dribbling into the box and around a Broncos' defender. From 14 yards out, he fired a shot into the lower left corner of the net.

Just about six minutes later, CPP put up its best chance of the second half. Daniel Garcia Jr. ripped a volley from close range on the right side but once again, Cohen contributed a stellar save to keep the Broncos scoreless.

CPP will have a chance to move back to .500 on Sunday with the 11:30 a.m. matchup against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
