Box Score | SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – A tremendous second-half rally fell short Tuesday as the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team suffered a 71-70 loss at The Master's College.
The Mustangs hit seven three-pointers in the opening half to build a 42-30 lead going into the break. CPP elevated its defensive intensity in the second half and a last-minute layup from
Daniel Rodriguez pulled the Broncos to within one point.
CPP had a chance to take the lead on its final possession but came up empty as the result dropped the Broncos' overall mark to 1-1 this season. Four CPP players scored in double figures, including
Jordan Faison, Rodriguez and
Ryan Hall all setting career bests in points.
Broncos' senior guard
DeRonn Scott opened up Tuesday's game with a three-pointer but it was the Mustangs that would do the most damage from beyond the arc.
TMC went 7-for-13 from three-point range in the opening half, including a 4-for-8 effort from junior Derrick Fain. One of two dunks from Faison pulled CPP to within 23-17 but the Mustangs countered with a 9-2 run initiated by a Fain trey.
Barry Bell contributed some stellar passing through the game and despite the Broncos trailing 42-30 heading into halftime, CPP closed the first period with Bell dishing a pass to Faison for an easy dunk.
Hall provided an efficient 13 points in 17 minutes of action to help fuel the Broncos' second-half rally.
Quentin Taylor also came up big for CPP with several defensive stops, five rebounds and a fastbreak layup paired with a free throw to cut the Mustangs' lead to 58-48 with 11:17 to play.
The margin stayed at a two-possession spread until the 1:32 mark, when Rodriguez grabbed an offensive rebound and dropped in a layup to make the score 68-65. Fain fired in his seventh three-pointer of the night to steal the momentum right back.
The Broncos weren't done though and Faison led the next offensive set, grabbing an offensive rebound off his own miss and tossing in a layup to cut the lead to four. Despite a block from Taylor and a steal from Rodriguez in the final 90 seconds, the Mustangs survived with the one-point win.
Faison finished with 19 points on 9-for-13 shooting while Rodriguez collected 16 points on a 7-for-9 effort from the field. Bell dished out five assists while Scott pulled down a team-high seven boards.
The Broncos will return to action Friday as they start a two-day tournament at Azusa Pacific. CPP will take on Western Oregon Friday at 5:30 p.m.
