Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – In a back-and-forth game at Kellogg Gym Tuesday against Cal State San Bernardino, the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team couldn't find its offensive rhythm down the stretch and dropped a 62-53 loss to the Coyotes.
A layup from
Daniel Rodriguez with 6:12 on the clock tied the score at 47-47 but San Bernardino finished strong to secure the nine-point win.
The lead changed hands 17 different times in the game and the large crowd at Kellogg Gym created an exciting atmosphere from start to finish.
The Broncos fall to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while the Coyotes improve to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in league play. CPP now gets a sizable break from competition with the next game arriving on Dec. 7 as the Broncos will host UC San Diego at 7:30 p.m.
Rodriguez, a junior out of Covina, led CPP in points and rebounds Tuesday as he scored 12 and added seven boards.
The Broncos committed just 13 turnovers and forced 18 from the Coyotes. The CPP offense couldn't capitalize on that margin though as the host squad shot 31.3 percent from the floor and went 10-for-18 at the free throw line.
Meanwhile, San Bernardino got a big effort off the bench from Andrew Young. The post player scored 16 points and contributed 10 rebounds, going 4-for-5 from the field and 8-for-8 at the line.
The Coyotes established a 24-16 lead late in the opening half but the Broncos got back-to-back threes from
DeRonn Scott and
Quentin Taylor to trim the margin to two points heading into halftime.
Two minutes into the second period,
Chad Haysbert slammed in a dunk to cut the CSUSB edge to one and
Barry Bell dropped in a layup on the next possession to give CPP a one-point lead.
The lead changed hands numerous times throughout the closing half but once Rodriguez scored the tying basket at 6:12, the visiting squad stepped up its game. The Coyotes held the Broncos scoreless over the next three minutes, establishing a seven-point lead in that span.
San Bernardino knocked down enough free throws to keep it a two-possession game over the final five minutes. In the end, the Coyotes posted a 16-for-21 effort at the line.
