Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team, ranked seventh nationally in the preseason poll, got its 2013-14 campaign off to a strong start as the Broncos cruised to a 73-46 home win over La Sierra in the opener.
CPP shot 51.8 percent from the field and outrebounded its opponent by a wide margin, 52-32. Every Bronco that played Saturday recorded at least two points while nine of the 11 active players dished out assists.
Leading the way offensively for the Broncos were
Jordan Faison and
Daniel Rodriguez. Faison shot 6-for-10 from the floor and added six rebounds while Rodriguez scored a career-high 14 points with a 5-for-6 shooting effort.
Four newcomers put in stellar debuts, including starting forward
Ray Ray Chase grabbing seven boards.
With a 1-0 record now, CPP will make a quick turnaround for a tough road matchup at The Master's College on Tuesday. La Sierra, a squad out of the NAIA, falls to 1-1 with Saturday's result.
The Broncos jumped out to a big lead early against the Golden Eagles, with Rodriguez scoring seven points in a 16-2 stretch for CPP to start the game.
DeRonn Scott also knocked down back-to-back baskets before LSU snapped its scoring drought that lasted more than five minutes.
After holding a No. 1 ranking defensively last year, the Broncos put together a strong effort in the season opener as the host squad held the Golden Eagles to 27.9-percent shooting.
CPP picked up four blocks in the contest, including one from
Ryan Hall at the 11:40 mark in the first half that led to a
Quentin Taylor dunk on the other end. The Broncos' first-half lead spread as wide as 22 points, after
Barry Bell raced out to the three-point line to swat away a shot from Ian Mozeleski and then Faison dropped in a layup to push the score to 37-15.
In keeping up the tempo on both ends of the floor in the second half, CPP extended its lead to as many as 31 points in the second half before the final result settled at 73-46. The Broncos shot well from three-point range, going 5-for-12 overall and 3-for-5 in the second half.
Back-to-back treys from
Jeremy Dennis and Faison were part of a 10-1 run midway through the closing period and both players added dunks later in the game. CPP totaled six dunks in the season opener, including two from Faison.
Scott contributed nine points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals in the first game of his senior season. Scott and the Broncos will take on The Master's College in Santa Clarita Tuesday with a 7 p.m. tipoff. The Mustangs, also out of the NAIA, are 1-1 this year.
