Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – Double overtime Saturday at Kellogg Gym brought back memories of
Mitchel Anderson's buzzer beater from
beyond halfcourt in 2012. But this time, Cal Poly Pomona didn't need a desperation shot in the final second.
The Broncos (4-3 overall, 2-1 CCAA) secured a thrilling 81-76 double-overtime win over Humboldt State (4-4, 0-3) Saturday as both teams provided plenty of theater with clutch shots down the stretch.
Just before the buzzer sounded in regulation, a fadeaway jumper from the Jacks' David Howard tied the game at 65-65 to force the first overtime. The roles reversed in the waning moments of the next period as CPP senior guard
DeRonn Scott knocked down a basket with five seconds on the clock, pushing the score to 72-72 and eventually forcing a second overtime.
The second and final extra period didn't feature a last-possession finish like the previous two but a
Jordan Faison layup at the 1:19 mark put the Broncos ahead 78-76. From there, CPP played tough defense and freshman
Quentin Taylor knocked down three of his final four free throw attempts to help the host squad capture the hard-fought win.
Five Broncos scored in double figures, including Scott with 22 points, Faison with 17,
Jordan Finn with 14,
Ryan Hall with 11 and Taylor with 10. Faison picked up his first career double-double performance with 10 boards in 45 minutes of action. As a team, CPP outrebounded the Jacks by a wide 53-38 margin.
Taylor played a key role in that as well, collecting nine rebounds. Certainly the most memorable board of the night for Taylor came midway through the second half as he leapt for a teammate's missed three-pointer, grabbed the ball above the rim and slammed it home to bring the Kellogg Gym crowd to its feet.
As expected, Howard proved to be the focal point of the Humboldt offense and he shined on both ends of the floor. The junior forward from Chicago totaled 26 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. The widest lead of the game for either team came in the first half when HSU's Jordan Mackie knocked down a three-pointer to give the visitors a 24-13 edge.
CPP chipped away at the margin and a tip-in from Hall in the final minute of the opening half put the score at 35-32 in favor of the Jacks going into the break. In the final minute of the second half, the Broncos had the last possession with the score knotted at 63 apiece. After a Taylor miss, CPP got a key offensive board from Finn, who had a great showing Saturday with six boards and four assists. Finn was fouled on the loose ball and then knocked down two free throws before Howard provided the buzzer-beating shot to move the game into overtime.
The two overtime periods showcased tremendous defense from both teams but in the end, Scott and Faison fueled the Broncos to victory. Scott scored four points in the first overtime, including the equalizing basket with five seconds to play. Faison totaled six of the team's nine points in the second overtime.
The two squads will challenge each other in Arcata next Saturday with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff at Lumberjack Arena to complete the regular season series.
