Box Score | POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team cruised to a 9-2 victory Friday over Saint Martin's in the 2013 season opener at Scolinos Field.

The Broncos jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after the first two innings behind stellar hitting from Chris Carlson and Jordan Whitman.

Freshman left-hander Max Bethell contributed a solid start on the mound for CPP and the Garden Grove native picked up his first collegiate win as he went 4.2 innings. To watch highlights of Friday's game, click here.

The two teams will resume their series with a Saturday doubleheader before closing out the four-game set with an 11 a.m. series finale on Sunday.

As a team Friday, the Broncos totaled 13 hits as Whitman led the way in that category with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate.

Carlson, a junior transfer from Orange Coast College, put together a spectacular CPP debut as he recorded four runs batted in to go along with a walk. The Chino Hills native doubled in two runs during his first at-bat and then singled in two runs just one inning later.

The Broncos took a 6-2 lead into the bottom of the fifth, when the host squad tacked on two more scores. The first came on a Whitman sacrifice fly and then Joseph Eusebio doubled down the leftfield line to bring in Carlson.

CPP also got it done defensively Friday. One highlight-reel play came from starting shortstop Trevor Magno, who fielded a ground ball past the second base bag and threw on the run for an acrobatic out. Later in the game, freshman first baseman Michael Erb dove to his right to take a base hit away from the Saints.

The Broncos' bullpen provided 4.1 innings of scoreless relief and Ryan Dunn starred among that trio of pitchers as he went perfect through the five batters he faced.
