BOX SCORE | SAN BERNARDINO & POMONA, Calif. - With Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino tied 5-5 heading into the top of the 11th inning, Friday's game was suspended due to darkness.
The teams agreed to resume the game Saturday morning at Scolinos Field in Pomona and after going scoreless through the 11th, the Coyotes got a walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th to secure a win and even the series.
Curtis Cassise proved to be the game's hero as he lined the winning single into right field to bring in teammate Christian Gomez.
With the loss, CPP dropped to 8-1 overall this season with a 1-1 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). San Bernardino owns records of 6-1 overall and 1-1 through league play.
Similarly to Thursday's series opener, the two squads got strong starts offensively in trying to take an early lead.
On Friday at Fiscalini Field, the Broncos scored three runs in the top of the first.
Donald Walter and
Jordan Whitman, CPP's hit leaders so far in 2013, both got on base to start the rally. After an error on the Coyotes' infield allowed Walter to score, Whitman crossed home on a single from Mike Philip. Later in the inning, a groundout by
Jason Padlo brought in Philp for the third and final run of the frame.
San Bernardino battled back for five runs in the second innings. The Coyotes' first two hitters reached base and Remington Miller provided the key hit minutes later as he lined a two-run single through the right side of the infield.
The host squad's two-run lead didn't last long though as CPP picked up two scores in the top of the third on one swing. Sophomore second baseman Nicholas Cooksey belted his third homer of the season over the leftfield fence and that brought Phelp around to score as well.
Although the outing of Broncos' right-handed starter
J.J. Franklin ended after 1.1 innings, reliever
Kyle McNutt quieted the Coyotes' offense as he threw 5.2 innings of scoreless ball. The bullpen continued to shine as
Chris Powell,
Ryan Dunn and
RJ Shanks also kept San Bernardino off the scoreboard to eventually force extra innings.
