POMONA, Calif. - Saturday featured plenty of exciting baseball at Scolinos Field and in the end, Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino split the series with two wins apiece.
After the Coyotes captured a 6-5 walk-off win in the resumed game that was halted Friday at San Bernardino, the Broncos bounced back with an impressive 11-6 victory in game one of the regularly scheduled doubleheader.
Sophomore second baseman Nicholas Cooksey provided a key three-run triple to break a 6-6 tie and senior right-handed starter
Kevin Bosson settled in nicely to collect his third win of 2013.
San Bernardino jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the series finale and ended up taking a 11-6 edge into the Broncos' final at-bat. CPP staged a tremendous rally but came up just short, falling 11-10 after a runner was caught stealing to end the game.
Now 9-2 overall and 2-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), the Broncos will resume conference play Thursday with a 2 p.m. home game against Cal State L.A.
Game 1 Box Score | Broncos 11, Coyotes 6
Although the Coyotes took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the second inning, the visitor's momentum didn't last long. The Broncos put three runs on the board in their next at-bat and ended up with 11 in the game to go along with 13 hits.
The bottom half of the CPP lineup did most of the damage with four of the final five players in the batting order recorded multi-hit games.
Junior first baseman
Bo Walter led the way, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. In the bottom of the fifth with the Coyotes trailing 5-4, Walter provided a clutch two-out single to bring
Joseph Eusebio around to score and give the Broncos a two-run lead.
Bosson racked up seven strikeouts through his 7.2 innings logged and freshman reliever
Cody Ponce eliminated any chance of a San Bernardino comeback as he threw 1.1 scoreless innings to record his third save of 2013.
Game 2 Box Score | Coyotes 11, Broncos 10
The Coyotes' offense got off to a fast start in the series finale, jumping out to an 8-0 lead with five of those runs earned against Broncos' senior right-hander
Erick Ruvalcaba. San Bernardino put four runs on the board in the first and four more in the second, an inning that included RBI doubles from Curtis Cassise and Jake Pilkerton.
The Broncos steadily chipped away at the deficit and
Chris Carlson got the host squad going in the bottom of the second with a leadoff triple. Carlson crossed home on a
Trevor Magno single and the Walter brothers picked up an RBI each later in the inning.
As CPP reliever
Andy Amaro managed to quiet the San Bernardino bats through the middle portion of the game, the Broncos trailed 11-6 entering their final at-bat. Pinch hitter Justin Caña led off with a single - his second career hit - but the rally seemed to sputter with two outs and the leadoff baserunner still at second.
CPP was far from done though as
Nick O'Loughlin drew a walk to load the bases and then Magno provided an RBI single.
Donald Walter then reached on an error that brought another run in and then
Jordan Whitman singled to pull the Broncos within just one run, 11-10. The Coyotes escaped with the win though, tagging Walter for the final out on a rundown.
