Box Score | SAN FRANCISCO - Behind double-double performances from
J.J. Judge and
Ashley Boggs, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team secured a 61-54 road win Friday at San Francisco State.
The result snaps a five-game losing streak for the Broncos, who hold marks of 12-11 overall and 10-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). CPP continues to hold sixth place in the conference standings, positioned between fifth-place Cal State L.A. and seventh-place Cal State San Bernardino.
Despite entering Friday's game as a 55-percent free throw shooter, freshman
Cydnie Jones put together a clutch performance at the line as she went a perfect 10-for-10 to help the Broncos secure the road win.
CPP claimed a huge rebounding edge over the Gators, 53-34, as Judge and Boggs combined for 24 of those boards.
Friday's game featured five lead changes and SF State held a six-point edge with 2:25 to play. The Broncos closed out the contest in terrific fashion with a 13-0 run to wrap up the victory.
CPP opened up a 15-8 lead to start Friday's contest as that spurt was capped off by an old-school three-point play from Boggs. The Gators slowly chipped away at the margin and managed to tie the score in the half's final minute on a three-pointer by Angela Van Sickel.
The Broncos responded before the halftime buzzer with a Boggs triple to retake the lead, 29-26, heading into the break.
CPP sustained the advantage through most of the second half, until Van Sickel knocked down another three-pointer at the 5:12 mark to give SFSU a two-point edge. The Gators' advantage pushed as high as six a few minutes later but the Broncos put together the impressive run down the stretch behind steady play from Boggs and stellar free-throw shooting by Judge and Jones.
With 20 points and a career-high 14 rebounds Friday, Judge earned her second career double-double performance. Boggs totaled 19 points and 10 rebounds to post her fourth double-double effort of the 2012-13 season.
On Saturday, the Broncos will travel to play ninth-place Sonoma State with a 5:30 p.m. start time. The Seawolves, 9-14 overall and 7-12 in CCAA play, have won three-straight games.
