Box Score | ROHNERT PARK - With a 68-60 road win at Sonoma State Saturday, the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team captured its first-ever outright conference regular season title.
In a span of 24 hours, the Broncos went from losing on a halfcourt buzzer beater at SF State Friday to making program history in Rohnert Park Saturday.
Although it marks the fifth California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) title in program history, the previous four were shared.
The Broncos, now 22-2 overall and 18-2 in conference action, will return home to host Cal State L.A. Wednesday as part of Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night at Kellogg Gym.
The regular season finale Friday will be against Cal State Dominguez Hills, a matchup that'll feature a Senior Night ceremony to honor
Mitchel Anderson and
Mohamed Fall.
CPP entered this past week at No. 4 in the latest NCAA Division II Top 25 poll and No. 2 in the West Region rankings released Wednesday.
Anderson starred offensively for the Broncos Saturday as he collected 19 points and seven rebounds. Anderson is currently in fourth place on the Broncos' all-time scoring list.
The host Seawolves squad gave CPP all it could handle and the closely-contested matchup featured 18 lead changes. As the conference standings are positioned now, the same two squads would meet in the first round of the CCAA Tournament as the No. 1 and No. 8 seeds.
Sonoma held a two-point lead with 4:15 left in regulation Saturday but the Broncos put together a 7-0 run that was capped off with an Anderson three-pointer to put the visitors up by five. As close as the game had been, the margin of five was the largest since late in the first half.
CPP kept its lead through till the final buzzer and the Broncos knocked down clutch free throws down the stretch. As a team, CPP went 14-for-19 at the charity stripe with
DeRonn Scott leading the way with a 6-for-7 effort. Scott finished with 16 points, three assists and two steals.
After the final two regular season games next week, the Broncos will shift their focus to the conference tournament. CPP will host a first-round matchup on Tuesday, March 5 at Kellogg Gym.
