Box Score | LA JOLLA, Calif. - Through the early part of the 2013 season, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team has staged a series of impressive comeback rallies.

Thursday's comeback fell just short though as the Broncos turned a 7-0 deficit into a one-run thriller but eventually dropped the series opener to UC San Diego, 7-6.

Offensively for CPP, junior shortstop Trevor Magno put together a 2-for-4 performance out of the leadoff spot while collecting two of the team's extra-base hits.

With five runs in the top of the sixth inning, the Broncos halted UCSD right-hander Ryan Goodbrand's scoreless inning streak at 31.

Five-consecutive batters reached base in that sixth inning as that span featured doubles from Magno, Bo Walter and Chris Carlson. Goodbrand also helped the Broncos along by throwing two wild pitches and hitting a batter.

Meanwhile, CPP senior lefty Ryan Dunn kept the visiting squad within striking distance by throwing 2.1 no-hit relief innings in the late stages of Thursday's game.

The Broncos' final run of the game came in the top of the eighth, when Magno tripled to start the inning and later scored on a fielder's choice groundball by Carlson. CPP even had the tying runner at third in the top of the ninth in the form of pinch runner Michael Johnson but he was stranded after a one-out strikeout and a two-out groundout.

The Tritons' offense had scored runs in each of the first four innings as Broncos' right-handed starter J.J. Franklin departed after 5.2 innings, giving up six earned runs and striking out six.

With Thursday's result in the series opener, CPP falls to 10-6 overall and 3-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Tritons improve to 10-6 overall and 5-4 through league play.

The two squads will resume their series Friday with another 6 p.m. game at UCSD.
