Box Score | SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Another spirited second-half rally fell short for the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team Friday as the Broncos suffered a 65-57 loss at Cal State San Bernardino.
The result drops CPP to 11-8 overall and 9-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Broncos remain in a tie for fourth place in the conference standings with Cal State L.A. as the Golden Eagles fell to Cal State Monterey Bay Friday.
Ashley Boggs and
Cydnie Jones paced the Broncos' offense Friday with point totals of 15 and 13 respectively. The CPP defense couldn't slow down Tayllor Gipson, who finished with 18 points off the bench for CSUSB.
In San Bernardino the Broncos and Coyotes traded baskets early in the first half, with an Boggs jumpshot giving CPP a 7-6 edge with about three minutes into the contest.
The host San Bernardino squad put together a modest 7-2 run after that field goal though, using Broncos' turnovers to capitalize on the opposite end.
The Coyotes established their largest lead of the half at the 3:52 mark when Eliza Dy drained a three-pointer to put the hosts up 25-18. San Bernardino took a 27-20 advantage into intermission.
Early in the second half, the Coyotes bumped the margin up to double digits after a Briana Baker free throw with 12:48 to play. Boggs snapped that 6-0 CSUSB run with a three-pointer from the left corner, cutting the lead to 37-30.
After Gipson knocked down a shot to put the Coyotes' lead at 47-36 with eight minutes to play, the Broncos started an impressive 10-0 run to make it a one-possession game. That stretch started with a layup from
Lisha Elsenbach and later in the rally,
Lauren Goecke completed an old school three-point play at the 5:13 mark.
San Bernardino got the difference back to two possessions and kept it there over the next few minutes, until Boggs contributed a three-point play of her own off a layup and free throw to make it a 60-57 Coyotes' lead with 38 seconds remaining.
The host squad closed out the contest strong though with stellar free-throw shooting. In the end, the Broncos finished with a 40-33 edge on the rebounds but committing 22 turnovers limited CPP's chances.
The Broncos will return to action Saturday with a 5:30 p.m. road game at UC San Diego. The second-place Tritons improved to 12-3 in CCAA action with a Friday victory over Humboldt State.
