Box Score | POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team collected 10 hits Thursday but ultimately fell to Sonoma State, 7-5, in the series opener.
The result drops the Broncos' marks to 17-13 overall and 10-11 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while third-place SSU improves to 19-8 overall and 11-6 in league play. The two squads will resume their series Friday with first pitch set for 3 p.m.
The Seawolves, ranked 20th nationally, totaled 11 walks Thursday and put together a five-run rally in the top of the sixth to take a 7-1 lead.
That six-run margin didn't hold for long though as the Broncos rallied for three scores in the bottom half of the same inning and added another run in the seventh to cut the lead to 7-5.
The top six hitters in the CPP lineup tallied all 10 of the team's hits with
Jordan Whitman scoring twice and
Donald Walter registering two runs batted in.
The free passes from the Broncos' pitching staff came back to haunt the host squad while the Seawolves got a stellar performance from righthanded reliever Steven Zaharias, who allowed just one run in 3.2 innings to earn his fourth save.
During CPP's three-run sixth, the Broncos got three-consecutive singles from
Bo Walter,
Jordan Whitman and
Donald Walter to start the rally. Padlo, who finished the day 2-for-4, drove in a run with an infield single and the Seawolves committed an error later in the inning to help CPP pull to within 7-4.
In the seventh, the Broncos manufactured a run with the help of a sacrifice bunt by Whitman and a sacrifice fly from
Donald Walter. On that flyout,
Trevor Magno made a tremendous slide into home to avoid the tag and cut the lead to 7-5.
That's how the score would stay though as Zaharias came through with a clutch relief performance. Leading SSU offensively was Sam Montgomery, who finished 3-for-5 with two runs batted in.
