POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team battled a pair of top-level pitchers Saturday but came up empty-handed in the win column as the Broncos suffered a pair of losses to nationally-ranked Sonoma State.

With victories of 3-1 and 6-0 scores Saturday, the visiting Seawolves captured a 3-1 series win to drop the Broncos to 18-15 overall and 11-13 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

CPP will look to bounce back next weekend as the Broncos are set to challenge Cal State Stanislaus for a four-game road series starting Friday in Turlock.

Game 1 Box Score | Seawolves 3, Broncos 1

The first game Saturday developed into an impressive pitching duel between a pair of seniors, Sonoma's Harmen Sidhu and Cal Poly Pomona's Ryan Dunn.

Dunn racked up seven strikeouts in the first four innings and finished with a career-high eight punchouts. The lefthander from Chino Hills allowed a solo homerun to Garrett Schwartz in the fourth inning and that 1-0 Seawolves' lead held through until the ninth.

Sidhu, a Martinez, Calif., native, also shined Saturday and managed to keep his pitch count low enough to complete the nine-inning contest. The Broncos put together promising rallies in the third and in the sixth but Sidhu and the Seawolves' infield managed inning-ending double plays in both instances.

CPP got a run in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly from Joseph Eusebio to score Donald Walter but the Broncos' last-inning rally proved to be too little and too late in the 3-1 loss.

Game 2 Box Score | Seawolves 6, Broncos 0

The second half of Saturday's doubleheader appeared destined for a similarly strong pitching duel as SSU's Glenn Wallace and CPP's Cody Ponce matched each other pitch for pitch. The Seawolves manufactured a run in the top of the first with a walk, a single and two fielder's choice groundouts and carried that 1-0 lead into the fourth inning.

SSU opened the top of the fourth with back-to-back singles and a pair of miscues from the Broncos' defense coupled with a cluch one-run single by Jeffrey Boulware gave the Seawolves a 4-0 advantage. SSU added two more runs in the sixth en route to the 6-0 victory to conclude the series win.

Wallace put together a complete-game performance with seven innings, three hits allowed and three strikeouts. The Broncos got solid relief outings from J.J. Franklin and Chris Powell in the second game Saturday as the two combined for two scoreless innings to close out the contest.

Through the four-game series with the Seawolves, freshman third baseman Jason Padlo led CPP in hits with eight in 14 at-bats. Junior Bo Walter's 13-game  hitting streak came to an end Saturday afternoon. Walter leads the team in batting average this season with a .389 mark.
