Box Score | SEASIDE, Calif. - Despite a career-best performance from senior
Ashley Boggs, Cal Poly Pomona's season came to an abrupt end with a 73-59 road loss Tuesday to Cal State Monterey in the first round of the conference tournament.
Boggs collected 24 points and 12 rebounds, marking her seventh double-double effort of the year. The Broncos shot 42 percent from three-point range but the Otters pulled away in the second half en route to the 14-point win.
CPP's 2012-13 marks settle at 14-13 overall after the team finished the regular season at 12-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
"I'm proud of how our seniors and our entire team battled tonight," Broncos' third-year head coach
Danelle Bishop said. "This result will certainly motivate our returners in the offseason and going into next year."
Three Broncos were featured in the conference's awards announcement earlier Tuesday with
J.J. Judge making the first team, Boggs getting a spot on the second team and
Cydnie Jones being named Freshman of the Year.
Tuesday's loss mark the final collegiate game for Boggs,
Jennifer Bryant,
Rachel Hatch and
Rachel Porter. The four have combined to play in 274 games as Cal Poly Pomona student-athletes.
The end of the season also snaps the Broncos' streak of three-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.
The first-round matchup in Seaside featured eight lead changes and seven occasions of a tie score. Midway through the first half with an 11-11 score, the Otters used a 13-0 run to quickly open a sizeable margin. The resilient CPP squad responded with a strong finish to the period, getting 11 points from Boggs in the final 4:12 of the half to go into the break only trailing 30-27.
With 15:21 to play in the second half, the Broncos tied the game and then took the lead on a pair of
Lauren Goecke free throws. The two teams traded leads a couple times and then Hatch and Judge knocked down back-to-back threes to take a 44-39 advantage - the largest margin for CPP in the game.
Monterey Bay rallied for a 15-0 run over the next six and a half minutes though and finished the rest of the game strong as well, pulling away for the 14-point victory. The Otters will challenge UC San Diego Friday in the semifinal round of the CCAA Tournament.
