Box Score | POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team extended its win streak to five games Wednesday with a 21-11 home rout of Azusa Pacific.
The matchup brought together the Broncos of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and the Cougars of the PacWest Conference. The CPP offense stole the show, collecting 24 hits as sophomore outfielder
Michael Johnson led the way with a career-high five hits in five at-bats.
After APU scored twice in the top of the first, the Broncos bounced back with nine runs in the bottom half of the inning. That fell just two runs shy of matching the program record for a single inning. Within that epic rally, freshman shortstop
Michael Erb stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and delivered a bases-clearing triple.
The Broncos' attack gained plenty of confidence Wednesday against the visiting Cougars of APU. The No. 1 through No. 4 hitters in the lineup combined for 14 of the team's 24 hits. In addition to Johnson's five hits, leadoff hitter
Nick Wagner tallied a career-high three hits in six at-bats, No. 3 hitter
Donald Walter went 3-for-6 with five runs batted in and cleanup hitter
Brennen Salgado posted a 3-for-5 day at the plate.
CPP got a series of strong relief performances from the pitching staff, including sophomore righthander
Chris Powell going 2.2 innings and striking out three while picking up his first win of 2013.
RJ Shanks and
Kyle McNutt helped the Broncos close out the 10-run victory Wednesday by tossing one scoreless inning apiece.
CPP will now take its 23-15 overall record into a critical CCAA matchup against Chico State as that four-game series will start Friday at 12 p.m. for a "Pack the Stands" event at Scolinos Field. For that series opener with the Wildcats, the Bronco Athletic Association (BAA) will be collecting shoe donations for ShoeBox Recycling. The shoes collected will be donated to children who are in need and once you donate, you'll receive a free hot dog and Pepsi.
