POMONA, Calif. - In the zone. Dialed in. However you want to describe it, Cal Poly Pomona senior pitcher
Ryan Dunn is there.
The lefthander from Chino Hills tossed seven masterful innings Saturday, leading the Broncos to a 1-0 home victory over first-place Chico State to snap the Wildcats' 15-game win streak.
After allowing four runs in the first week of the season, Dunn has given up just four scores since then. His earned run average has dipped to 1.50, ranking fifth among California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) pitchers. With a doubleheader split Saturday, the Broncos (24-17, 16-15 CCAA) are now one of three teams tied for fifth place in the conference standings. Sonoma State is fourth at 14-12 (.538) while CPP, Cal State East Bay and Cal State Dominguez Hills are within 0.003 percentage points of each other for that No. 5 spot.
Nine regular season games remain on the CPP schedule and after that, the top four teams advance into the CCAA Championships to be held in Stockton from May 9 through May 11.
Game 1 Box Score | Wildcats 5, Broncos 1
The Broncos' bats fell silent in game one Saturday as Wildcats' right-handed starter Troy Neiman threw six scoreless innings, allowing five hits and three walks.
Chico jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with designated hitter Cody Webber ripping a leadoff triple in the top of the second before Myles Dempsey and Roger Boulden followed with singles later in the inning to cap off the rally.
The Wildcats got stellar relief outings from Morgan Yee and Chris Rodriguez as the Broncos' only run came as unearned when
Joseph Eusebio raced from second base to home on a Chico throwing error.
CPP senior righthander
Kevin Bosson turned in a workmanlike complete-game effort, going all nine innings while allowing 10 hits and five earned runs while striking out seven hitters.
Game 2 Box Score | Broncos 1, Wildcats 0
Saturday's second game featured a thrilling pitching duel between Dunn and Wildcats' senior righthander Mike Botelho. Dunn held Chico hitless through the first three innings and the two pitchers combined to allow just five hits between them.
The offenses went scoreless through five complete innings, building the excitement among the large crowd at Scolinos Field just as the sun peaked through the Pomona skies. After Botelho stole away some CPP momentum in the fifth when the Broncos stranded two more runners on base, the host squad started another rally in the bottom of the sixth.
Trevor Magno, who reached base in four of his seven plate appearances Saturday, doubled down the leftfield line to open up the Broncos' half of the sixth.
Bo Walter ended a five-pitch at-bat by grounding out to the right side of the infield, succesfully moving Magno over to third. Senior outfielder
Jordan Whitman didn't waste any time driving in the eventual game-winning run as he drove a sacrifice fly to center that brought Magno in to score.
Dunn came out firing once again in the seventh and final inning, getting two groundouts and a strikeout in that last frame. The Chino Hills native finished with six strikeouts Saturday, the second-highest total for him in 2013. Making his 52nd career appearance as a Bronco, Dunn improved to 4-1 with the victory.
