Box Score | POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team got another tremendous pitching performance from freshman Cody Ponce Sunday but the Broncos' bats couldn't provide any run support in a 3-0 loss to first-place Chico State.

The Broncos started the day in a tie for fifth place in the conference standings but now at 24-18 overall and 16-16 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), CPP has fallen into a three-way tie for the No. 6 spot with a pair of 14-14 teams - UC San Diego and Cal State East Bay.

With eight CCAA regular season games remaining, the Broncos are still in contention to land a spot in the conference playoffs. CPP owns a winning percentage of .500 in league play while the No. 4 team - Sonoma State - stands at .571.

The Broncos return to action Friday on the road at Cal State Monterey Bay (.630 winning percentage) to start a four-game series before a final home set against Cal State East Bay (.500) from May 3 through May 5.

Chico State, ranked third nationally in the latest Division II poll, took a 1-0 lead in Sunday's game with an unearned run in the top of the first. Blake Gibbs knocked a two-out double down the leftfield line and later scored on a throwing error by the Broncos.

The Wildcats added another run in the fourth after Ponce allowed a leadoff walk that produced a score later in the inning off a sacrifice fly.

The CPP offense struggled to get going against Wildcats' senior righthander Kagen Hopkins, who went eight innings while allowing just three hits. The Broncos' best chance to trim the lead came in the bottom of the seventh, when they worked the bases loaded with just one out. Chris Carlson and Donald Walter helped set up the rally with walks and Jordan Whitman provided a clutch single on an 0-2 pitch but CPP ended up stranding all three of those runners.

Ponce finished his eight-inning outing with nine hits and two earned runs allowed while striking out four hitters. Broncos' sophomore righthander Chris Powell pitched a scoreless top of the ninth in relief. Chico State's Sean Martin picked up his third save of the season after inducing a groundball double play in the ninth to end the contest.
