POMONA, Calif. - Jada Blackwell is set to join the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball program for the 2013-14 school year, head coach
Danelle Bishop announced Thursday.
Blackwell is transferring from Arizona State of the Pac-12 Conference. A 6-foot-1 forward from Etiwanda, Blackwell will be competing as a junior for the Broncos during the 2013-14 season.
"We've obviously needed a better post presence on our team and Jada definitely brings that," Bishop said. "She had a great high school career at Etiwanda and she excelled in the Pac-12 as well. We're excited that she's now a Bronco."
Blackwell provided key contributions for the Sun Devils during the past two seasons as she played in 49 games during that span.
During her freshman season in 2011-12, Blackwell finished second on the team in field goal percentage with a .437 mark. She scored in double figures five times and pulled down five or more rebounds nine times. In a Pac-12 quarterfinal win over Arizona, Blackwell collected 11 points and six rebounds.
During the 2012-13 season at ASU, Blackwell saw action in 18 games. In her 16.2 minutes per game, Blackwell grabbed 4.5 rebounds and scored 7.1 points each contest. Continuing her efficient play from the previous season, she shot .458 overall from the field. During the Pac-12 season opener on Jan. 4 at Washington, Blackwell scored a career-high 29 points on 12-for-17 shooting while adding eight rebounds.
Blackwell graduated from Etiwanda High School in May 2011 after leading the girls' basketball team to a 24-4 record and a CIF State Tournament appearance as a senior. During that season, she earned All-San Bernardino First Team honors while averaging 17 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.2 steals per game.
The Blackwell family has an impressive background in athletic success. Jada's father Henry starred in football at East Carolina and her older brother Perris was an All-West Coast Conference selection at San Francisco before joining the Pac-12 Huskies of Washington this past year.
Once at the CPP campus, Blackwell will pursue a degree in Communication. While at ASU, she earned a Scholar Baller award for her hard work in the classroom.
