SEASIDE, Calif. - Despite outhitting Cal State Monterey Bay in the second half of Saturday's doubleheader, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team was dealt a pair of defeats after having a tough time converting the hits into runs against the Otters' pitching staff.

Monterey Bay starters Jeff Owen and Will Anderson combined for 13 innings and just four earned runs as the Otters captured victories by scores of 10-2 in game one and 7-3 in game two.

Starring for the Broncos' offense Saturday was Trevor Magno with a 3-for-4 effort in the first contest and Nick O'Loughlin collecting three hits of his own in the second game.

With the Saturday results, the Broncos fall to 24-21 overall and 16-19 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while third-place Monterey improves to 28-12 overall and 21-10 through league play. CPP will look to snap its four-game losing streak Sunday as the Broncos and Otters will start the series finale at 11 a.m.

Game 1 Box Score | Otters 10, Broncos 2

The Otters took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one and the host squad added four more scores in the fourth after a fielding error by the Broncos helped Monterey continue its rally against CPP starter Kevin Bosson.

The Broncos struck for a run in the sixth after Magno and Jordan Whitman reached base before Donald Walter provided an RBI groundout.

CSUMB rallied for four more runs through its next two turns at the plate, putting the game out of reach en route to the 10-2 victory.

Through five innings of work, Bosson collected three strikeouts to move his career total to 258. That mark puts him just five shy of moving into sole possession of second place on the Broncos' all-time strikeout leaderboard. Kirk Washington, who played for CPP from 1983 through 1986, ranks No. 1 on the list with 308.

Game 2 Box Score | Otters 7, Broncos 3

The Otters jumped out to another 1-0 lead in the second game before the Broncos rallied to tie the score in the top of the third. O'Loughlin opened with a leadoff single before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Andrew Stein. Two batters later, Chris Carlson tallied an infield single to bring in O'Loughlin.

Monterey Bay steadily built up a small lead once again as Broncos' starter J.J. Franklin lasted 3.1 innings while giving up five hits and six earned runs. With an RBI single from O'Loughlin to score Joseph Eusebio, CPP pulled to within a 7-3 gap in the sixth but the Broncos couldn't close the margin any further.
