Box Score | TURLOCK, Calif. - Max Bethell is only a freshman at Cal Poly Pomona but with a veteran presence on the mound Friday, he came close to making history.

A lefthander from Garden Grove, Bethell nearly etched his name in the program's record book under the no-hitter section. He held Cal State Stanislaus hitless through eight complete innings before the Warriors struck for two hits and two runs in the ninth.

The Broncos' offense had already put the game out of reach with 17 runs on 19 hits, including a six-run rally in the fourth and a seven-run outburst in the ninth. Each of the CPP lineup spots generated at least one hit while Trevor Magno, Chris Carlson and Joseph Eusebio collected three hits apiece.

Bethell, making his 10th appearance of the season, improved his record to 4-3 with the complete-game effort. The Pacifica High School graduate has been the Broncos' game one starter through the entire 2013 season. With the result, CPP improves to 19-15 overall and 12-13 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

Less than three weeks ago, a seven-inning no-hitter was thrown on the same Warrior Baseball Field by Stanislaus' Andrew Graham against Cal State Dominguez Hills. Six no-hitters have been thrown in the history of Broncos' baseball but only one has been of the nine-inning variety. That came in 2003 when Efren Lira, a Walnut native, held Cal State Stanislaus hitless at the same Warrior Baseball Field.

The Broncos got on the scoreboard in the second inning Friday when a two-out infield single from Eusebio brought in Carlson to score. Carlson initiated CPP's six-run rally in the fourth with a one-out single as that inning also featured a two-run single by Magno up the middle, a location that the Broncos' hitters when back to five different times on Friday.

CPP, already ranking within the top 20 nationally in sacrifice flies, added three more Friday with Eusebio, Nick O'Loughlin and Nicholas Cooksey adding one apiece. The Broncos knocked four extra-base hits, including doubles from Bo Walter, Jason Padlo and Eusebio to go along with a three-run homer by Humberto Tovalin in the top of the ninth.

The Broncos and Warriors will resume their series Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
