Box Score | POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team showed plenty of resiliency Friday while staying within striking distance of Cal State East Bay but the game ended in a 7-6 loss for the Broncos after a ninth-inning rally was cut short on a pickoff play.
The Broncos put their two baserunners in motion on a full-count, one-out pitch to
Jason Padlo but the Pioneers chose the right time for a pickoff play, recording outs on both
Jordan Whitman and
Chris Carlson to end the contest.
CPP falls to 24-23 overall and 16-21 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while the Pioneers remain in the race for a playoff spot at 31-16 overall and 21-16 in conference action. The two teams will resume their series Saturday with an 11 a.m. doubleheader as the Broncos look to snap their six-game losing streak.
Carlson led the CPP offense Friday, reaching base in all five of his plate appearances with four hits and a walk. Whitman knocked his 13th career homerun to lead off the seventh inning and cut the East Bay advantage to 7-6.
In each of the early innings that the Pioneers scored in, the Broncos came right back and rallied offensively in the bottom half of those same innings. In the seesaw-style matchup, the CPP attack did a good job of staying patient at the plate and forcing a high pitch count for East Bay starter Matt Fontaine.
The Broncos manufactured their early runs, getting two scores in the second with a sacrifice fly from Padlo and a groundout RBI by
Trevor Magno. In the next inning, a Whitman sacrifice bunt helped moved
Bo Walter along before he later scored on a double from Carlson.
Although the Pioneers' offense got to CPP lefthanded starter
Ryan Dunn on occasion, the Chino Hills native worked out of jams as the visitors ended up stranding nine runners on base through the entire contest. Broncos' reliever
Andy Amaro pitched well to close out the game, throwing three scoreless innings and striking out two along the way.
CPP couldn't get any runs across in the final two frames as Pioneers' pitcher Ben O'Bryan picked up the save with 1.2 innings of no-hit relief.
