POMONA, Calif. - Despite dropping another tough one-run loss in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, Cal Poly Pomona bounced back to defeat Cal State East Bay by a score of 3-2.

Broncos' starters Kevin Bosson and Max Bethell each turned in gutsy performances, working out of jams repeatedly and keeping the host squad within striking distance. In the first game, Bosson recorded four strikeouts to move into a tie for second place on the Broncos' all-time strikeout list.

Junior outfielder Chris Carlson continued to provide plenty of offense and he's now 8-for-10 in the series with a double and a homerun.

The series and season finale will start Sunday at 11 a.m. and before the game at about 10:45 a.m., the Broncos will hold a ceremony for their five seniors: Bosson, Donald Walter, Nick O'Loughlin, Ryan Dunn and Jordan Whitman.

Game 1 Box Score | Pioneers 5, Broncos 4

The Broncos held a 3-0 lead through six complete innings in the first game but the CPP defense struggled in the late stages as the Pioneers picked up three unearned runs to stage a comeback and hold on for the 5-4 victory.

Bosson allowed regular baserunners early on but forced the Pioneers to leave seven on base through the first three innings while the score remained 0-0. The senior righthander from Claremont ended the top of the sixth with a pair of strikeouts, pushing his career total to 262 to rank second in school history.

In the bottom half of that inning, Joseph Eusebio and Whitman provided clutch doubles down the line to push CPP's lead to 3-0. The Broncos' first run of the game came in the fourth on a solo shot by Carlson, the third homer of the year for him.

The Pioneers brought nine hitters to the plate in the critical eighth inning and leadoff hitter Eren Miravalles knocked the go-ahead, two-run signal to centerfield on a 2-1 pitch from Bosson.

CSUEB ace pitcher Sean Becker finished the game strong as he went the full nine innings while allowing 10 hits and three earned runs.

Game 2 Box Score | Broncos 3, Pioneers 2

The Pioneers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second game with an unearned run in the top of the first. The visitors' momentum didn't last long though as the Broncos rallied for one run in the second and two more scores in the third. CPP's first four hitters reached base in the second and the rally was capped off with a single from Brennen Salgado that scored Jordan Whitman, who opened the inning with a leadoff walk.

CPP got off to a quick start in the bottom of the third inning as well with Trevor Magno initiating the rally with an infield single before promptly stealing second. Later in the inning, the Broncos got back-to-back RBI singles from Mike Philp and Salgado to take a 3-1 advantage.

The Pioneers managed to get a run back in the fourth but the CPP bullpen held strong in relief of starter Max Bethell. The trio of Andy Amaro, RJ Shanks and J.J. Franklin combined for three scoreless innings and Franklin picked up his first career save in the Broncos' 3-2 win.
