POMONA, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona Director of Athletics
Brian Swanson announced Wednesday the hiring of
Stephanie Duke as the program's Interim Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator (SWA).
"Stephanie is a wonderful addition to both the athletics program and our campus community," Vice President for Student Affairs Doug Freer said. "She is a well-respected, knowledgeable and an experienced leader. Her work is highly regarded by colleagues throughout the state. I have no doubt she will be ready to hit the ground running."
Duke excelled in the Associate A.D./SWA role at Cal State Monterey Bay through the past six years and while at the campus in Seaside, she also served as the Otters' Interim Director of Athletics from July 2008 to October 2008. While at CSUMB, Duke supervised seven sports, compliance and sports medicine.
"Stephanie's administrative and coaching experience at the NCAA Division II level will be an asset to our department," Swanson said. "Her understanding of the conference and her success at promoting the student-athlete experience will greatly benefit our current and future Broncos. We are fortunate to have Stephanie joining our team."
Also during her time in Seaside, Duke oversaw the daily operations of the Otter Sports Center and served as the liaison to admissions, financial aid, records, residential life, and undergraduate advising. She also participated on the Women's Volleyball Regional Advisory Committee and served as the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women's soccer liaison.
"I'm excited for the opportunity to join an institution with great academic and athletic tradition," Duke said, "and I'm looking forward to working with our outstanding staff, coaches, and student-athletes. Providing the best possible student-athlete experience is the top priority and I look forward to being an integral part of that."
Duke helped guide CSUMB athletics department through a period of tremendous change, playing an integral part in the transition from NAIA to Division II, assisting with facility improvements to the Otter Sports Center and gymnasium.
Duke arrived to CSUMB from Notre Dame de Namur, where she served as women's basketball head coach, senior woman administrator and sports information director from 2001 to 2006. Duke rebuilt the women's basketball program at NDNU, bringing more exposure to the program, was named the 2002-03 Cal Pac Coach of the Year, and helped transition them from NAIA to Division II.
Prior to NDNU, Duke served as women's basketball co-head coach at Cal State Hayward during the 2000-01 season and as assistant coach from 1996 to 2000. Duke worked with the Sacramento Monarchs of the WNBA from 1997-2001.
A recipient of a bachelor's degree in kinesiology from Cal State Hayward, Duke later earned her master's degree from CSUH in sports administration. She was a two-time letterwinner at Cal State Hayward and a two-year starter at El Camino College on the women's basketball team. In 2007, Duke was inducted into the El Camino College Hall of Fame.
The Broncos' Associate A.D./SWA position was held most recently by Tracee Passeggi, who was appointed Cal Poly Pomona's Interim Director of the Disability Resource Center earlier this month. Passeggi spent six years in the Broncos' athletic department and she was instrumental in guiding the program through many seasons of student-athlete success.
