Box Score | CARSON, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team showed plenty of resiliency Sunday against Cal State Dominguez Hills as the Broncos played hard through 110 minutes to earn a 2-2 draw on the road.
The host Toros - preseason favorites in a vote of the league's coaches - outshot the Broncos 16-6 and attempted 17 corner kicks to CPP's one. Nonetheless, the Broncos' defense held tough and the team will take a 2-1-1 overall record into more tough road matchups next weekend.
It took a bit more than eight minutes for the first shot to be recorded on Sunday but CPP made it count. Freshman
Adi Azran blasted a shot from 35 yards out into the upper right corner of the net to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead with his first collegiate goal.
The Toros bounced back with the equalizer in the 18th minute off a Sebastian Cortez corner kick, which led to a header goal by Ernie Ramos from the middle of the six-yard box.
The 1-1 score held up for quite some time, until Dominguez Hills struck for the go-ahead goal at the 73:07 mark. This time it was Patrick Fuchs lining a free kick past CPP goalkeeper
Andrew Todd, who was momentarily shielded on the play.
Trailing 2-1 on the road, the Broncos didn't back away from the challenge. A pair of CPP newcomers combined to get the Broncos back to even with the Toros.
Jose Ortega slipped a long through ball past the Dominguez defense and freshman
Luis Najera Jr. was there to collect it and knock a shot past Toros' goalkeeper Trey Mitchell.
The Toros had three more corner kicks before the end of regulation but the Broncos kept the 2-2 score in check and the game moved to overtime. Through the extra periods, only one shot was attempted and it was taken by Dominguez. In the end, Todd finished with a season-high five saves as the last line of the CPP defense.
The Broncos' road stretch will continue next weekend, starting with a Friday matchup at Cal State San Bernardino. CPP's home opener is set for Friday, Sept. 27 against Sonoma State.
