Box Score | SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – This men's soccer rivalry across Interstate 10 is no longer a one-sided affair.
In the recent matchups between Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino, the Broncos entered Friday having gone winless through the last seven meetings. That changed today as CPP topped the Coyotes, 1-0, to secure the team's first conference win of 2013.
It also marked the program's first road win in San Bernardino since 2007 and the Broncos' first shutout there since 1999.
Freshman
Mathew Perez knocked in a penalty kick at the 55:25 mark and that proved to be the game-winning goal, ending the Coyotes' school-record shutout streak at 638 minutes. It handed CSUSB its first loss of 2013 as well with the Coyotes now 4-1-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
Senior goalkeeper
Andrew Todd put together another solid performance, collecting five saves to match his season high while recording his fourth career shutout. The Broncos improve to 3-1-1 overall and 1-1-1 through CCAA action.
Up next, CPP will challenge Chico State in an 11:30 a.m. road match Sunday. The Wildcats suffered a 1-0 home loss to UC San Diego Friday.
The Broncos and Coyotes played evenly throughout Friday's match with the hosts holding a slight 15-13 advantage in shots. Despite CPP picking up 21 fouls as compared to San Bernardino's 21, the Coyotes were issued five yellow cards. One of those cautions came at the 55:25 mark, when the official carded Tyler Schoenfeld and awarded the Broncos with a penalty kick.
First-year head coach
Yossi Raz called on Perez to take the penalty and the freshman student-athlete from Corona converted the try. Friday marked the first career start for Perez, who had entered the team's first four matches off the bench. Perez is a 2013 graduate of Santiago High School.
In addition to Todd's stellar work in net, the Broncos also got strong performances from the back line.
Abiel Coronado,
Justyn Peeples and
Leonel Espinoza joined Todd as the four Broncos to play the full 90 minutes Friday in helping the team keep the shutout intact.
