POMONA, Calif. – Last week, Cal Poly Pomona alum and NBA official Violet Palmer visited campus to receive her Division II 40th Anniversary Tribute Team award from NCAA officials.
Although Palmer's day at CPP was packed with media interviews and facility tours, her favorite part was talking to the Broncos' women's basketball team.
A member of the 1985 and 1986 national championship teams, Palmer talked to the team about the journey to those two titles and her ascent in pro basketball through her career in officiating.
The special day had to come to an end eventually but the impact of her visit and conversation with the Broncos will have a lasting impact far into the future.
As part of Palmer's selection to the D-II Tribute Team, she will be invited to attend the 2014 NCAA Convention in San Diego to be recognized and she'll also be featured in a Division II mini-documentary to be released later this year.
The Broncos' women's basketball program has plenty on their schedule as well with the season set to begin on Friday, Nov. 8.

Daily Bulletin: Palmer worked hard to blaze a trail for herself, others
Violet Palmer was out of her comfort zone Tuesday afternoon.
Being showered with praise and surrounded by well-wishers is, well, the exact opposite of what she's used to.
It won't be long before the NBA's only female referee returns to hulking players barking in her face, coaches questioning her every move and thousands of fans raining jeers upon her nightly, but for one day the Cal Poly Pomona graduate was one of 48 former NCAA Division II athletes across the country awarded a spot on its tribute team.
