Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – With a two-goal effort from Brandon Cortez, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team toppled the North Division-leading Sonoma State squad 3-1 on Friday at Kellogg Field.

It marked the home opener for the Broncos, who improve to 4-2-1 overall and 2-2-1 in conference play. The Seawolves drop to 4-2-1 overall and 3-2-0 through California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action.

CPP ended up outshooting Sonoma, 17-8, in the match. Pressure early led to a handball in the Seawolves' box and Broncos' junior Abiel Coronado converted on the subsequent penalty kick. After a look to his left, Coronado lined the attempt into the bottom right portion of the net.

The Broncos got a pair of key chances later in the opening half, including Luis Najera Jr. bending a shot in the 33rd minute that seemed destined for the upper right corner of the net. It caromed off the crossbar and the score remained 1-0.

Sonoma evened the tally early in the second half after a defensive miscommunication from CPP. Aaron Glover sent a bending cross into the box from the left side. Nobody from either squad was there to meet the ball and it bounced inside the far post to knot the score at 1-1.

The Kellogg Field crowd got a scoring showcase from Cortez through the next 10 minutes. The senior forward from Mission Viejo broke the 1-1 tie with a tremendous blast from 20 yards out. After getting a pass from Najera, Cortez dribbled quickly through the middle of the field and drilled a hard shot the opposite way into the upper right corner of the net.

Less than five minutes later at the 58:20 mark, Cortez scored again. CPP moved the ball quickly up the right side with passes by Leonel Espinoza and Jesus Mitre. Cortez proved to be the beneficiary of that movement as it led to a one-on-one opportunity with the goalkeeper. Staying patient, Cortez dribbled around SSU netminder Beau Diaz and put the Broncos ahead 3-1.

For Cortez, the two scores Friday marked goals No. 5 and No. 6 of his career. In the first seven matches of 2013, he's already matched his 2012 goal output of three scores.

With the help of the CPP defense, starting goalkeeper Andrew Todd only faced one shot on goal. Each team earned four corner kicks through the 90 minutes of action.

With a huge win in their first home match of 2013, the Broncos will now shift their focus to Sunday's contest against Humboldt State. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m. at Kellogg Field.
