Box Score | OAKLAND, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team scored three second-half goals Thursday at Holy Names to capture a 3-1 comeback victory in the season opener.

Freshman Luis Najera Jr. turned in a tremendous collegiate debut, playing a key role in each of the Broncos' goals as he scored once and collected two assists.

The match marked the first-ever meeting between the Broncos and Hawks, with HNU recently joining the PacWest Conference. The 3-1 result is the first head coaching win for Yossi Raz, who arrived to CPP in February.

Although the Broncos controlled the tempo and possession through the first half of Thursday's opener in Oakland, HNU staked a 1-0 advantage heading into intermission after a David Norton goal in the 24th minute.

Just about one minute into the second half, CPP struck for the equalizer. Najera collected a through ball, dribbled toward the corner and then sent a cross into the goalmouth. Brandon Cortez delivered with a header for the score at 46:17, tying the game 1-1.

Less than four minutes later, the Broncos rallied for the go-ahead goal. Daniel Garcia Jr. stole the ball away from the Hawks just outside the box and sent a cross into Najera, who sent in a quick header. The HNU goalkeeper got a hand on the ball but not before it crossed over the goalline for the score.

The Broncos' defense held tough through the second half and the offense broke through for an insurance goal in the waning moments.

With just about three minutes remaining in regulation, CPP cleared a Hawks' corner to midfield for Cortez. After he sent a pass up to Najera in the right corner, the goalkeeper charged up to cut down the angle. Najera lifted a pass over his head to Jesus Mitre, who nudged in an uncontested header. It marked the first career goal for Mitre, who is a senior from Los Angeles.

The Broncos (1-0) will return to action Saturday with a 4:30 p.m. road game against Dominican. The Penguins of DU, a squad that also plays out of the PacWest Conference, will be competing in its 2013 season opener that game.
