Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – It didn't come easy but the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team knocked off Sonoma State Saturday, 57-54, to stretch the Broncos' winning streak to seven games.

CPP hasn't lost since Nov. 26 and Saturday's game at Kellogg Gym featured the narrowest margin of victory in that stretch of seven wins. Down to the wire against the Seawolves, the Broncos knocked down just enough free throws and grabbed the critical rebounds to secure the three-point victory.

Atop the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings now are No. 1 Cal State San Bernardino (8-0) and No. 2 CPP (7-1). Chico State and Cal State L.A. are locked in a tie for third at 6-2. The Broncos will travel to take on L.A. Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Neither CPP or Sonoma managed to get a double-digit lead Saturday as the game stayed close from start to finish. Despite the Broncos getting outrebounded for the first time this season - 29-26 - CPP kept its turnovers low (12) while forcing the Seawolves to commit 18.

Freshman guard Quentin Taylor provided a lift for the Broncos' offense, scoring a team-high 15 points with three field goals from beyond the arc. Senior DeRonn Scott added 13 points, including three free throws in the final minute. CPP finished with 13 steals as a team as Daniel Rodriguez tallied four to match his career high.

In addition to Taylor, a trio of reserves also brought a boost of energy for the host squad. Jeremy Dennis, Connor Gacek and Francois Tchoyi went a combined 5-for-6 from the field.

A defensive struggle ensued from the opening tipoff as SSU staked a 9-3 advantage with already seven minutes of the contest completed. The Broncos took their first lead at the 6:08 mark after Gacek collected a steal and converted a layup on the other end.

Scott knocked down a jumper in the final seconds of the half to give CPP a 32-28 edge going into the break. The Broncos started strong in the next period as well, with Rodriguez knocking down a triple off a Scott assist on the opening possession.

The Seawolves continued to battle though and the lead changed hands four different times in the second half. Barry Bell, who ended up with seven points and a season-high seven rebounds, tossed in a layup at the 3:23 mark to tie the score at 52-52.

Taylor knocked down a pair of free throws to give CPP a 54-52 lead and in the final minute, the Broncos got extra chances at the line courtesy of a technical foul charged to the Seawolves' coaching staff.

SSU trailed by four points with two seconds on the clock and Michael Avery stepping to the line. Avery knocked down his first attempt and intentionally missed the second attempt so that the Seawolves could try for the equalizing three-pointer. Broncos' junior forward Chad Haysbert boxed out nicely though and pulled down the decisive board to wrap up the 57-54 win for the home squad.
