Box Score | CARSON, Calif. – After
Jordan Finn knocked down a clutch three-pointer late in Saturday's game to cap off a crazy Cal Poly Pomona comeback at Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Broncos knew they weren't going to let such a stunning second-half performance go to waste.
CPP erased a 14-point second-half deficit in a span of five minutes and eight seconds. The run started with a pair of
DeRonn Scott baskets and finished with the key trey from Finn. The Broncos kept the offensive pedal pressed to the floor and through the final 9:04 of the contest, the Broncos outscored the Toros 27-5.
It continues an impressive nine-game winning streak for CPP through December and January. The Broncos haven't lost since Tuesday, Nov. 26 against Cal State San Bernardino. At 11-3 overall and 9-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Assocation (CCAA), CPP sits one victory behind the undefeated Coyotes (10-0).
Finn, a junior guard out of Rancho Cucamonga, finished with 14 points off the bench Saturday and all four of his baskets came from three-point range.
Scott - a high school teammate of Finn - also delivered key points down the stretch as he totaled 18 in the game on 7-for-13 shooting. Scott added seven rebounds and four assists, both team bests in the game.
The Broncos racked up a season-best eight blocks Saturday, including four from
Chad Haysbert and three from
Jordan Faison. CPP also limited the Toros to a 40-percent effort from the field.
Although the visiting Broncos' squad took a 31-30 lead into halftime, CSUDH started the second half on a 12-0 run while holding CPP scoreless through the first seven and a half minutes.
Scott snapped the Broncos' scoring drought and then a few minutes later, he opened that impressive 27-5 CPP run with four-straight points of his own.
Faison also provided a big second half for the Broncos' offense as he registered 16 points total on 7-for-12 shooting.
CPP will return to Kellogg Gym for a 7:30 p.m. game on Thursday against Chico State as part of "Pack the Stands' night.
In comparing the current nine-game winning streak to last year's memorable 28-3 season for the Broncos, the previous 2012-13 campaign featured stretches of nine-consecutive victories and also a winning streak of 12 games.
As far as Saturday's frenetic comeback, it's up there with the best. The largest deficit faced in a CPP victory is 21 points, which occurred twice in program history - once in 2013 and once in 2009. The 21-point deficits were realized late in the first half though while Saturday's 14-point hole came midway through the second half.
