Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team turned in another fine defensive effort Thursday as the Broncos topped San Francisco State, 66-56, for their sixth-straight win.
CPP took a 10-point lead into halftime and sophomore
Jordan Faison posted a monster second-half performance, scoring 16 of his 18 points in the closing 20 minutes and totaling a career-high four blocks. He finished 8-for-11 from the floor.
As a team, the Broncos shot 50 percent from the field and outrebounded the Gators 36-32. Senior
DeRonn Scott contributed 17 points and a season-high eight rebounds while
Barry Bell added 13 points, also a season best.
At 8-3 overall and 6-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), CPP is still holding onto third place in the conference standings. The Gators are in the midst of a five-game road stretch and with Thursday's result, they fall to 6-4 overall and 4-3 in league action.
Both offenses started out slow in the first half of Thursday's game. The Broncos managed to take a 28-18 edge into the break with the 18 points for SFSU matching the lowest for a CPP opponent this season.
The Broncos started building up a modest lead about midway through the opening half and the spurt was initiated by a pair of hustle plays. Faison got an offensive rebound and putback for a 12-8 lead and then on the other end of the floor, freshman
Quentin Taylor picked up a steal and then threw down a thunderous fastbreak dunk to give CPP a six-point advantage.
Scott sank a jumper with just three seconds left in the half as the Bronocs finished the first period on a 10-1 run.
Gators' guard Nefi Perdomo finished 8-for-8 at the free throw line Thursday and it was some of his consistent shooting there that helped the visitors trim away at the difference in the second half.
A tip-in from Udun Osakue cut the margin to three points - 34-31 - with 13:27 to play, but that would be as close as the Gators would get in the second half. The Broncos responded with a three-pointer from
Jordan Finn and the momentum quickly shifted in the hosts' favor.
Although CPP finished just 14-for-27 at the free throw line as a team, the Broncos' defense and rebounding helped close out the home win with relative ease down the stretch.
CPP will return to action Saturday with a 7:30 p.m. home game against Sonoma State.
