AZUSA, Calif. - Despite a career-high 36 points from
Jada Blackwell, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team suffered an 85-81 double-overtime loss to Azusa Pacific.
The result dropped the Broncos to 0-2 while the host APU squad improves to 2-0 on the young season.
Three CPP players joined Blackwell with double-digit point totals, including
Ariel Marsh at 14,
Ashley Lovett with 13 and
Tyler Woods chipping in 11. The Cougars' offense was bolstered by a 30-point performance from Miriam Zabinsky.
The two squads matched each other in points through the first three periods, collecting 30 points each in the first half, 36 each in the second period and totaling 10 points apiece in the first overtime. APU outscored the Broncos 9-5 in the second overtime period.
CPP couldn't slow down a strong three-point night from the Cougars. Zabinsky knocked down six of her nine attempts and the host team went 11-for-25 overall. The game featured nine lead changes and six instances of a tie score.
The Broncos opened up a seven-point lead just past the midway point of the first half, after
Erin Hagan knocked down a free throw. The Cougars rallied back to tie the score heading into halftime.
APU took a 10-point edge into the final seven minutes of regulation, but CPP put together an impressive rally to pull even once again. A triple from Blackwell with 5:26 on the clock cut the lead back to six and a layup by Lovett a few minutes later put the Broncos ahead 61-60. Marsh and Zabinsky traded three-pointers in the final minute before the squads entered overtime at 66-66.
CPP jumped out to a four-point lead in the first overtime but the Cougars rallied to tie the score once again. With both teams shooting well at the free throw line, the even tally couldn't be broken and the game moved to overtime No. 2.
APU opened the second overtime on a 4-0 run and late free throws sealed the victory for the Cougars.
The Broncos will return to action Wednesday with a 6 p.m. home game against Academy of Art.
