POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team will return to action Monday night at Kellogg Gym with a 7 p.m. tipoff against the Bristol Bears.
The Broncos have started the 2014-15 season a 5-2 overall record, including a 2-1 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). In its two December games, CPP topped Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay to rise above .500 in league play.
Monday's game against Bristol will be the final non-conference game for the Broncos. CPP will resume CCAA action on Sunday with a 4 p.m. road contest at UC San Diego. The Broncos will look to avenge a 69-66 loss to the Tritons in the conference opener on Nov. 22.
Monday's opponent - the Bristol Bears - compete out of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA). They own a 3-6 record so far this year with wins over Cal Lutheran, Occidental and Pomona Pitzer. Bristol suffered narrow losses to Division II opponents Cal State East Bay and Fresno Pacific.
Leading the Bears' attack is junior Brandon Chavers. So far in 2014-15, he's averaged 14.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game.
Having held their last two opponents to an average of 53 points per game, the Broncos' defense has moved up to No. 21 on the D-II leaderboard. CPP has also excelled in the turnover battles, posting a positive margin of 4.9 to rank 27th nationally.
Senior guard
Terrence Drisdom has notched double-digit points in each of the first seven games, including a season-high 27 points versus Azusa Pacific in November. With 16.9 points per contest, Drisdom is tied at the top spot on the CCAA leaderboard. The Corona native has also helped in the rebounding category as well, ranking fifth in the league with 6.6 boards per game.
Looking ahead to Sunday's afternoon matchup at RIMAC Arena in La Jolla, it'll be another exciting CCAA contest. Both the Broncos and Tritons have 2-1 records in league play as they chase undefeated Sonoma State and Chico State as those two squads own 3-0 marks.
