SAN DIEGO - The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team opened its 2014 season with a pair of wins Saturday as the Broncos swept a doubleheader at Point Loma Nazarene.

With each game finishing by a margin of one run, 5-4 and 4-3, the Broncos' bullpen provided a series of impressive performances. Through the two contests, the CPP relievers allowed just one run in 7.1 innings.

Second baseman Trevor Magno finished as the hit leader on the day for the Broncos as he tallied three hits in seven at-bats. Now 2-0 on the season, the Broncos will play their home opener on Monday with first pitch set for 2 p.m. at Scolinos Field against the same Point Loma team.

In the preseason National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) West Region poll, CPP was ranked at No. 8 while the Sea Lions received votes just outside the top 10.

Game 1 Box Score | Broncos 5, Sea Lions 4

The two squads traded runs early through the first game of the doubleheader and took a 3-3 score into the top of the fifth. CPP got on the board in the first with an RBI groundout from Chris Carlson and then took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second after Steven Andrade drove in a run with a single.

Andrade added another RBI in the fourth on a sacrifice fly that scored Joseph Eusebio but the decisive rally for the Broncos came in the fifth.

Magno initiated the inning with a single through the left side of the infield and later moved to third on a David Armendariz double. CPP took a 5-3 edge with a pair of manufactured runs, the first from Magno scoring on a wild pitch and then Armendariz crossing home on a Carlson sac fly.

After allowing three early runs to PLNU, Broncos' left-handed starter Max Bethell settled in a delivered a quality start of five innings. The game then got turned over to the bullpen, with Austin Boyle contributing two scoreless innings and then Andy Amaro adding a flawless frame of his own.

Sea Lions' Lucas Di Ciccio knocked a solo homer in the ninth to trim the lead to 5-4 but J.J. Franklin closed out the save and the CPP win.

Game 2 Box Score | Broncos 4, Sea Lions 3

The host PLNU squad captured the early momentum in the second half of the doubleheader, plating three runs in the first inning on Broncos' starter Steven Farnworth. The junior right-hander from Valencia settled in though, holding the Sea Lions hitless through the next 4.2 innings before turning it over to the CPP pen.

The Broncos' offense was held scoreless in the first seven innings as Kellen Sheppard kept the CPP hitters guessing. The visitors didn't give up though and put pressure on Sheppard in the eighth.

Pinch hitter Jason Padlo reached on an error to start the rally and Magno followed with a double down the leftfield line. PLNU committed another error later in the inning and the Broncos managed to score four runs, two off singles by Carlson and Eusebio along with a fielder's choice RBI from Matt Munoz and a sac fly by Bo Walter.

Jake Menzhuber threw 1.1 scoreless relief innings to earn his first career win as a Bronco while R.J. Shanks and Amaro also threw well to turn it over to Franklin for his second save of the day.
