Box Score | SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – In front of a sellout crowd in San Bernardino, Cal Poly Pomona stole the show.
In the all-time series between CPP and Cal State San Bernardino, Saturday's game marked the first meeting in which both teams were nationally-ranked. More impressive history was made in the final score, a 88-68 win for the Broncos that marked CPP's largest margin of victory over the Coyotes in school history.
The result hands San Bernardino its first conference loss of the season while snapping the Coyotes' 16-game winning streak. The win also moves the Broncos into a first-place tie with San Bernardino as the teams hold identical 13-1 records in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
The Broncos' winning streak now stands at 13 games, the second-longest stretch of victories in program history.
Sophomore
Jordan Faison led the scoring for CPP Saturday, collecting a career-high 26 points on 12-for-16 shooting. Also turning in a career performance was
DeRonn Scott, who dished 11 assists to become the first Bronco to reach that total since 2006.
The Broncos outrebounded the Coyotes, 43-24, including a career-best 11 boards from
Daniel Rodriguez.
Jordan Finn and
Quentin Taylor joined Faison and Scott in double figures with 11 points apiece.
Right from the opening tipoff, the Broncos played with plenty of intensity. CPP got a pair of stops on the defensive end to start the game and on the other side of the floor, Faison knocked down a jumper for the team's first basket and then threw down a dunk on the next possession.
Faison collected two more dunks later in the half while teammate
Francois Tchoyi added one of his own to help silence the San Bernardino crowd. In a matchup between the league's top offense and top defense, it was the Broncos' attack that put on a show.
It took just about three minutes - 12:07 to 8:59 - for the Broncos to put together a 13-0 run that turned a 14-11 lead into a 27-11 margin. The team's toughness on the boards certainly helped and CPP took a 28-9 rebounding edge into the intermission with a 46-24 lead in points.
The Broncos' strong play continued in the second half and at the 11:53 mark in that period, Scott sank a jumper that gave CPP its largest lead of the game - a 32-point margin of 68-36.
The host CSUSB squad closed the game on an 11-3 run but the game was out of reach at that point. Through the 40 minutes of action, the Broncos shot a season-best 63.5 percent from the field.
This coming week, CPP returns home to host Cal State Monterey Bay Thursday and Cal State East Bay Saturday. Homecoming and Family Weekend will be held on campus Friday and Saturday.
