Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team suffered its first loss of the season Thursday as the Broncos fell 4-2 to UC San Diego in the series opener at Scolinos Field.

CPP put together rallies late and threatened to make yet another comeback but the Broncos couldn't capitalize on their chances with the Tritons' defense collecting four double plays in key situations.

The two teams will resume their series Friday with another 2 p.m. game at Scolinos Field. CPP now is 10-1 overall and 4-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while UCSD improves to 6-4 overall and 3-2 through league play.

Senior outfielder Joseph Eusebio collected three of the the Broncos' six hits Thursday while fellow fourth-year David Armendariz added two hits of his own. Another senior, Andy Amaro, pitched well in relief and recorded three scoreless innings.

The UCSD offense jumped on CPP starter Max Bethell early though as the visitors plated three runs in the top of the first. Justin Donatella picked up the victory for the Tritons as he threw seven innings while allowing just four hits and two runs.

Designated hitter Nick La Face delivered a two-run single in the first, giving UCSD its first two runs of the game.

After the Tritons took their 3-0 lead, the Broncos broke through for a score in the bottom of the second when Steven Andrade placed a sacrifice fly into right that brought Joseph Eusebio home. CPP loaded the bases in that same inning but a double play cut the rally short.

Bethell settled in nicely and with Amaro's strong relief outing, the Tritons were held scoreless through the final six innings. Once UCSD sent in relief for Donatella to start the bottom of the eighth. Trevor Magno worked a leadoff walk but even after Armendariz added a single later in the inning, another double play ended the potential rally.

The Tritons' Scott Zeman pitched a scoreless ninth inning to collect his second save of the 2014 season.
