CARSON, Calif. - With close finishes in each of Cal Poly Pomona's first eight conference games this season, all of that changed for the Broncos Thursday at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The two teams split a doubleheader with each game featuring a lopsided result. The Toros won the first game, 10-2, before CPP rallied to take game No. 2 by a 14-2 score.

Senior outfielder David Armendariz put together a stellar day at the plate, going 5-for-8 through the doubleheader with three runs, five RBI and a homerun.

Leading the pitching staff in game two were Steven Farnworth and Austin Boyle, who contributed four scoreless innings apiece. With the victory in game two, the Broncos improve to 13-3 overall and 7-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) as they continue to lead the league in wins. Dominguez Hills is at 9-4 overall and 4-2 through conference play.

The Broncos and Toros will conclude their four-game series on Sunday with a doubleheader at Scolinos Field starting at 11 a.m. Dominguez Hills ranks at No. 10 in the latest West Region poll while CPP is second regionally and No. 15 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper national poll.

Game 1 Box Score | Toros 10, Broncos 2

The Toros' offense broke through for six runs in the bottom of the second inning, chasing CPP starter Max Bethell after an outing of 1.2 innings complete. That rally featured a two-run double from shortstop Peter Ives.

Senior right-hander Andy Amaro quieted the Dominguez bats as he contributed 4.1 innings of scoreless relief for the Broncos. The deficit proved to be too large for the CPP attack though as the visitors managed just one run in the third inning and another in the eighth.

Matt Muñoz started the Broncos' rally in the top of the third with a two-out walk. He later scored on a Chris Carlson double down the line. CPP manufactured its second score in the eighth after Joseph Eusebio led off with a two-base hit. Bo Walter moved Eusebio to third with a fly out and then a Brennen Salgado groundout allowed Eusebio to cross home.

Starter David Haerle picked up the win for the Toros as he finished with six innings pitched. He allowed six hits and five walks while striking out five.

Game 2 Box Score | Broncos 14, Toros 2

Game two featured a narrow lead for the Broncos through the early and middle innings. CPP rallied for eight unanswered runs in the final three innings, cruising to a 14-2 victory.

Freshman Steven Andrade put the Bronocs on the board with an RBI double in the second before Armendariz launched a two-run homer in the third to put CPP ahead 3-0. It marked the third homerun of the season for Armendariz, who is tied for the league lead in that statistic.

After the Broncos put up six runs in the top of the eighth - their largest rally of the game - Boyle kept the momentum going with a 1-2-3 frame in the bottom half as he shut down the Toro hitters.

Through Farnworth's four innings at the start, he allowed just one walk and struck out five. Boyle was just as effective, scattering two hits, walking just one and striking out four. Meanwhile, the CPP offense helped its cause by drawing eight walks and reaching base twice on hit batters.

The 14 runs weren't void of big hits though and Carlson took advantage of a mistake pitch with one out in the eighth and the bases loaded. He lined a triple to right field, knocking in three and pushing the Broncos' lead to 11-2.
