Box Score | TURLOCK, Calif. - Despite clutch shots from
Jordan Finn and
Ryan Hall down the stretch, the 17th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team suffered a 74-73 double-overtime loss Friday at Cal State Stanislaus.
It marked CPP's first road defeat in conference play this season. With their five-game win streak snapped, the Broncos fall into second place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings. CPP stands at 20-5 overall and 18-3 in league play while first-place Cal State San Bernardino takes a 19-2 CCAA mark into the regular season finale Saturday.
The Broncos will take on Chico State in another tough road matchup while the Coyotes play at Cal State L.A. Both games will start at 7:30 p.m.
Sophomore guard
Barry Bell put together a career performance offensively Friday, scoring 17 points while adding six rebounds and three assists. With
Jordan Faison,
Francois Tchoyi and
Ray Ray Chase fouling out, Finn and Hall provided a boost for the CPP offense in the late stages of the contest. Those two Broncos accounted for 17 of the team's final 20 points.
CPP trailed 61-58 in the waning moments of regulation and the team's first three-point try to tie it up caromed off the rim. Diving to the floor, Finn grabbed the loose ball and kept the play alive. On a last-second three-point attempt by Bell, the Warriors were called for goaltending and the game moved to overtime tied at 61-61.
This time it was the Broncos gaining the late momentum as a dunk from Hall put CPP ahead 66-65. Finn added two free throws to put the margin at three points heading into Stanislaus' final possession. The Warriors' Tyler Barber knocked down a triple just before the buzzer, sending the two squads into double overtime at 68-68.
Although back-to-back baskets from Hall and Finn gave the Broncos a 73-71 edge, Stanislaus got three free throws from Sam Marcus in the final minute to pull off the 74-73 victory.
Four Broncos finished in double figures as Finn totaled 14 points,
Quentin Taylor contributed 12 and Faison added 10 as those three joined Bell in that category. Senior guard
DeRonn Scott collected a team-high nine rebounds.
