Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – Trailing by three points in the final offensive possession Thursday at Kellogg Gym, the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team couldn't get the game-tying shot to fall and dropped a 60-57 result to Cal State Monterey Bay.
In program history, the Broncos' record for largest deficit in a win was 21. That happened twice and Thursday would have been the third instance if the visiting Otters hadn't shut down CPP in those final moments.
It marks the Broncos' first loss since Nov. 26 while snapping a 13-game win streak. At 15-4 overall and 13-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), CPP falls back into second place in the conference standings. Cal State San Bernardino holds a 13-1 mark in league play.
The Broncos, ranked 18th nationally, had won the previous nine matchups against Monterey Bay. The Otters' last victory over CPP was a 54-49 overtime result in the CCAA Championships of 2008-09.
Certainly the Broncos can take a lot of positives from their second-half performance, in which CPP outscored Monterey Bay 41-32. A late 10-0 run cut the Otters' lead from 14 to four and after
DeRonn Scott scored five points in the final minute, Monterey held a 58-57 edge with 30 seconds to play.
Otters' sophomore Alex Fertig knocked down a pair of clutch free throws at the 24-second mark to push the difference back to three points, 60-57. The Broncos had some clean looks at the basket on their final possession but couldn't find the equalizer.
The Otters' largest lead of the game came at the 3:59 mark in the first half when they found themselves up 28-7. At halftime, CPP trailed 28-16.
The Broncos' comeback attempt in the second half was fueled by strong defense and the host squad collected 10 steals, marking just the third time this season that CPP has reached double digits in that category.
Daniel Rodriguez finished with a team-high three steals Thursday to go along with eight points and 10 rebounds.
Barry Bell,
Jordan Finn and Scott tallied nine points apiece. Bell also added two blocks to match his career best for that statistic. Faison swatted two shots Thursday, marking the seventh-straight game he's recorded at least one block.
CPP will return to action Saturday with a 7:30 p.m. "Homecoming Game" against Cal State East Bay at Kellogg Gym.
