FULLERTON, Calif. - With a pair of impressive provisional marks from veteran Broncos, the Cal Poly Pomona men's track and field excelled Friday and Saturday at the Ben Brown Invite in Fullerton.

Senior Ryan Carrell, who helped the CPP cross country team place eighth nationally in the fall season, put together a strong race Saturday in the 5,000-meter event. He crossed the line in 14:39.81 to place sixth. A Westminster native, Carrell was the top Division II finisher in that run.

Another highlight for the Broncos Saturday was Justin Ellerbee's showing in the pole vault. A junior from Rocklin, Ellerbee cleared the height of 16-6.75 to take first place in the event. He continues to move closer to his personal best, which was set at 16-9.5 last year.

In sprints Saturday, James Weiner placed second in his section of the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.95. He also posted the team's top 200-meter mark at 21.77.

In the 400-meter event, Robertino Salgado fell just shy of notching a provisional as he ran a 48.91 to finish second in his section. Kaleb Trembly performed well in the triple jump Saturday, tallying a distance of 47-2.25 to place third overall.

In the javelin throw, David Perez added a few more feet to his season-best mark. He registered a distance of 191-9 Saturday, topping his previous mark of 189-2.

The Broncos will return to action Thursday with the start of Cal State Northridge Multis.
