NEW ORLEANS - With
Justin Ellerbee leading the way by ranking first nationally in the pole vault, Cal Poly Pomona men's track and field has moved up to No. 6 at the NCAA Division II level in the
team rankings.
Although many D-II squads from other regions across the country haven't competed yet, the No. 6 ranking demonstrates the Broncos' strong start to the 2014 season.
Several CPP student-athletes rank within the top 10 individually on the national leaderboard.
James Weiner posted the ninth-fastest 200-meter time this past Saturday, crossing the line in 21.77 at the Ben Brown Invite.
Robertino Salgado is at No. 9 in the 400-meter dash, recording a 48.91 mark in Fullerton.
The Broncos' distance runners are making an impact in the spring as well. Within the 5,000-meter rankings,
Ryan Carrell is at No. 3 (14:39.81) while
Mark Huizar and
Aiden Irish follow at No. Â 8 and No. 9.
The CPP 4x100 relay continues to improve and that group now owns the seventh-best time this season at 41.40. Running in that relay are
Robert Weathers, Weiner,
Gabriel Wirtz and
Louis Martin III.
James Gonzalez has starred in the high jump, posting a height of 6-6 at the Cal State L.A. Invite to hold the No. 7 spot at the D-II level.
Austin Allen isn't far behind his teammate Ellerbee in the national pole vault standings as he went for 15-11 at CSULA in March.
The Broncos return to action this week with a busy schedule toward the end of Finals Week. CPP competes in multis at Cal State Northridge Thursday and Friday before the CSUN Invitational Saturday. The Broncos also will be competing at the Redlands Invitational Friday.
