Box Score | POMONA, Calif. - After seeing Chico State and Sonoma State sweep weekend series to take over first place in the conference standings, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team picked up a 6-4 home win Tuesday over Cal State Dominguez Hills to keep pace with the league leaders.
Tuesday's seven-inning game at Scolinos Field represented the series finale for the Broncos and Toros, who played the first three contests of the four-game set in early March while rain shuffled the schedule.
CPP ended up capturing three wins in the series as the Broncos now hold marks of 21-7 overall and 14-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).Â
Sophomore righthander
Cody Ponce contributed five strong innings Tuesday, allowing six hits and one run while striking out five. CPP carried a 6-1 lead into the Toros' final at-bat, in which Dominguez scored three to make it an interesting 6-4 final.
Austin Boyle recorded the final two outs for the Broncos to earn his second save of the season.
The CPP offense did a tremendous job of manufacturing runs on Tuesday. Of the six scores, one came from a hit batter, two from sacrifice flies and another from a groundball out.
With two outs and the bases loaded in the first, freshman
Steven Andrade put the Broncos on the board with an RBI single.
Jason Padlo and
Joseph Eusebio delivered the sac flies later in the game while senior
David Armendariz also recorded a clutch at-bat, lining a double in the sixth to bring in
Trevor Magno.
After the Toros trimmed the lead to 6-4 with just one out in the seventh, Boyle managed to induce back-to-back popups in the infield to guide CPP to victory.
The Broncos will return to action this weekend with a four-game road series at Sonoma State.
