Box Score | LOS ANGELES -Â The 17th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona baseball team suffered a 7-0 loss at Cal State L.A. Thursday in the series opener of a four-game set.
The Broncos' defense committed four errors and the offense couldn't get going against Golden Eagles' lefthander starter Ryan Santhon. A senior from Tarzana, Santhon tossed a complete-game gem, allowing just three hits and striking out 11 in the shutout.
The result moves the Broncos and Golden Eagles into a tie for second place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings. Both teams have 8-4 marks in conference play so far in 2014.
The only hits by CPP Thursday came from the heart of the lineup with
David Armendariz,
Chris Carlson and
Bo Walter collecting one apiece. The top of the L.A. lineup generated plenty of offense for the host squad and leadoff hitter Casey Ryan proved to be a catalyst, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored.
The Golden Eagles broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third, capitalizing on three-straight hits before a batter was hit by a pitch to force in the first run. One of the Broncos' four errors brought in another score that inning.
CSULA catcher Cody Doyle delivered a two-run double in the fifth, pushing the Golden Eagles' lead to 4-0. Broncos' lefthander
Jake Menzhuber got the series' game one start and lasted 6.1 innings, allowing six runs with three of those being earned.
CPP relievers
Andy Amaro and
Michael Koval put together solid performances out of the bullpen but Santhon kept the Bronco bats quiet from start to finish, putting any lead out of reach.
The Broncos and Golden Eagles will resume the series Friday with another 6 p.m. game at Reeder Field in Los Angeles. Carlson, a senior from Chino Hills, will carry a nine-game hitting streak into game two of the series while Walter owns a hit streak of seven games.
