LOS ANGELES -Â After an extended break from competition because of rain last weekend, the Cal Poly Pomona men's track and field team didn't miss a beat Saturday as the Broncos put together a strong effort at the Cal State L.A. Invite.
Junior
Justin Ellerbee, a national qualifier last year, almost matched his personal best Saturday as he recorded a pole vault height of 16-4.75 to take first in the event. Following in second was teammate
Austin Allen, who registered a provisional qualifying mark of 15-11. Ellerbee set the school record in the pole vault last season with a 16-9.5 height.
After Saturday's showing, Allen now ranks sixth on the Broncos' all-time top 10 list for pole vault. Also entering the record book Saturday was fellow third-year
David Perez, who topped his season-opening javelin distance of 183-2 with a new season-best of 189-2 on Saturday. That provisional qualifying mark moves him into a tie for fifth on Broncos' all-time leaderboard.
Freshman
Mark Huizar led a strong CPP pack of five runners in the 1,500-meter race. Huizar finished with a time of 4:02.63 while
Brandon Haugen and
Garrett Pankratz were less than a half-second slower. One of Huizar's cross country teammates from the fall,
Aiden Irish, took first place in the 3,000-meter run Saturday with a time of 8:30.28.
James Weiner and
Louis Martin III made strong season debuts in the 200-meter dash, posting identical 22.04 marks in that event. Senior
James Gonzalez continues to show improvement in the high jump and he recorded a height of 6-6 Saturday to take third place in the event.
The Broncos will return to action on Friday with day one of the Ben Brown Invite hosted at Cal State Fullerton. That meet's schedule can be
